Getting to Montauk and Around

Visiting Montauk for the first time?

Here’s some information to help you get there and around:

If you plan to drive, you can only park your car at a select few beaches without a season parking pass. If you plan to spend the summer, be sure to register your car with the Town of East Hampton for a parking sticker. A pass for the 2013 season costs $275 and a copy of your vehicle registration is required when applying. For more information call 631-324-4142.

Not taking a car? It’s easy and inexpensive to get around by local taxis or by bike.

Public transportation from NYC is easy.

LIRR – The Long Island Railroad is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to get to Montauk.  It gets busy during the summer, so a seat is not guaranteed. Save money by buying your tickets before boarding at the train station kiosk or online ($25 during peak hours, $18.50 during off-peak one-way from NYC).  Surfboards are not permitted on rush hour trains, but are allowed on certain off-peak trains throughout the day. Call before you book at 718-217-5477.

HAMPTON JITNEY – The Jitney is one of the most comfortable ways to travel to Montauk. Tickets are a bit more expensive ($30 one way, $53 roundtrip), but a coach seat is reserved along with a complementary drink and snack. Reserve your seat online and pay after boarding by credit card. Surfboards are allowed and can be stowed underneath the coach for an additional $15.

Forgot your board? No worries. There are plenty of those to go around.
