The Brazilian Amazon – Health and Happiness

Projeto Saude and Alegria (Health and Happiness Project) is a non-governmental organization that works with communities in the riverbank villages of the Tapajós and the Arapiuns rivers. Doctors and educators make regular visits and work together with people bringing healthcare, projects that can generate income to families that live off the forest, education, and much more.

Today we made a visit to their offices in Santarém. Besides getting a full tour of their building, I got to meet several different people and learn of the different projects they are involved with like the Community-based Ecotourism and, one of my favorites, the TV Mocoronga.

I spent some time talking to Bob Barbosa and Gabriel Abreu who coordinate the project of videos made by cell phones in the villages, which are then posted on TV Mocoronga’s youtube channel.

Tomorrow, they leave on a three-day trip to the Tapajós, where they will be giving workshops on filming and editing. They invited me, together with my family, to join them on their travels and of course we said yes.  Stay tuned for our first exploration in the Amazon. A trip to the Tapajos.
